Legal News for Wisconsin Product Liability Attorneys. Mislabeled Food Club Supreme Clean Clear Ammonia recalled due to chemical danger.

Wisconsin firm recalls product due to chemical hazard, CPSC announces.

Plover, WI—The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://www.cpsc.gov announced that OnLine Packaging Inc. has participated in the voluntary recall of Food Club Supreme Clean Clear Ammonia due to a chemical hazard on Thursday, January 7, 2010.

The manufacturer, based in Plover, Wisconsin, has recalled approximately 75 bottles of the Supreme Clean Clear Ammonia after the firm discovered that the product was falsely labeled and actually contained household bleach as opposed to ammonia. The Food Club Supreme Clean Clear Ammonia is contained in a 64 ounce white bottle and allegedly has a date code that can be located on the lower shoulder of the bottle. The product was reportedly sold in Piggly Wiggly Midwest stores from August 2009 to September 2009 for approximately $1.50.

It was noted that toxic gases could be produced if the bleach were to be accidentally combined with ammonia or acid, subsequently causing a chemical danger to consumers. The firm reportedly has not received any reports of injuries in regards to the recalled product. Information provided by the State of New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services stated that by mixing bleach and ammonia, chloramines, a type of toxic gas, is formed. If an individual is exposed to this gas, symptoms including coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, watery eyes, irritation to the throat, nose and eyes, pneumonia, and fluid in the lungs, could result. It was also stated that if chlorine bleach were to mix with an acid, chlorine gas would be produced which could cause many similar symptoms and even death, if the consumer is exposed to too much chlorine gas.

Consumers are urged to either discard the product appropriately or return the mislabeled product to Piggly Wiggly for a full refund.
