Perry Pulling Away from Hutchison as Election Day Approaches
March 1, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison’s slim gubernatorial hopes may ride on the success of a Tea Party candidate in Tuesday’s Texas primary.
Incumbent Gov. Rick Perry can avoid a runoff with Hutchison if he manages to secure 50% of the vote in the Republican primary, and after a major gaffe by Tea Party candidate Debra Medina, it appears Perry will cross that threshold.
Perry is pulling away despite being outspent by the Hutchison camp. Hutchison has spent $19.7 million on the primary campaign compared to Perry’s $17.7 million, according to campaign finance reports. A strong showing by Medina, who has spent a little more than $500,000, would send a message to the rest of the country as to how organized and serious this Tea Party movement is.
