U.S. – A former casino worker has settled a lawsuit against his previous employer over alleged work-related secondhand smoke exposure, which he says contributed to his developing lung cancer. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Vince Rennich’s settled the lawsuit against the Tropicana Casino & Resort in Atlantic City for $4.5 million, but stated the actual goal of the suit was part of an effort to ban smoking in these types of facilities. He reportedly developed lung cancer after working at the casino for 25 years.

Stephanie Steinberg, chairwoman of Smoke-Free Gaming of America is quoted in the report as stating of the issue of secondhand smoke in casinos, “The gaming industry has knowingly harmed the health of their employees and patrons… They tell their employees the air is safe and the ventilation is sufficient. And yet, their employees are sick and dying from the toxic, smoke-filled air. The casinos are going to be held accountable, and it’s going to cost them.”
