Harvey, LA—A construction worker was rushed to the hospital after he fell about 8 feet into a pit at a construction site on Monday, January 3, 2011. The construction accident occurred about 10:15 a.m. at a former oil change business that is being converted into a New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood Co. restaurant in the 2400 block of Manhattan Boulevard near Lapalco Boulevard, as reported by NOLA.com.

Police officials reported that while the 25-year-old worker was working in the building’s darkened interior, he removed a piece of plywood, which was covering an oil-changing pit, causing him to fall about 8 feet to the concrete floor below.

A responding confined-space rescue team lowered a specialized stretcher into the pit to lift the injured man from the bottom of the pit. He was then rushed to University Hospital in New Orleans, where he was treated for a broken collarbone and released.

The identity of the worker is being withheld at this time.

Richard Walsh, a project manager for Kent Construction in Mandeville said, the man works for the restaurant and was installing a freezer when he fell.

A full investigation is underway.
