San Francisco, CA — A Yemeni passport-carrying man was wrestled to the ground after he began beating on the cockpit door of an American Airlines flight Sunday night, May 8, 2011. The Boeing 737 landed safely at 9:10 p.m. and the man was taken into police custody, reported the Associated Press.
According to officials, the man was yelling “unintelligibly” when he ran past a flight attendant as the American Airlines Flight 1561 was about to land at the San Francisco International Airport. The plane was carrying 162 people at the time.
The suspect was tackled by a male flight attendant, as well as other crew members and a couple of passengers as he was pounding on the cockpit door.
The plane landed safely at 9:10 p.m., and the suspect was immediately taken into police custody.
The flight originated from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The suspect was later identified as Rageit Almurisi, 28. It is not clear whether Almurisi’s nationality is also Yemeni, although he carried a Yemen passport.
Police charged Almurisi with interfering with a flight crew, which is a federal offense.
Almurisi was taken to a hospital for a check up following the altercation. He sustained some bruises in the incident.
No one else was injured on the flight.
It is unknown if the incident is linked to terrorism. Investigations are underway.
