Jackson, MS — Jackson Public Schools has been accused of mistreating students by handcuffing them to poles at the district’s alternative school in a lawsuit filed by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The lawsuit was announced on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, after the law center spent a month urging JPS to stop the alleged mistreatment and instate a stricter policy on the use of restraints, reported the Clarion-Ledger.
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) claims students at the school were mistreated for minor infractions, like not wearing a belt.
The students claim that they have spent hours at a time handcuffed to a pole in the back corner of the alternative school gym.
One student at the alternative school is named in the suit, which is not seeking monetary damages. Instead, the lawsuit is seeking an end to the practice of using restraints.
One former student, Drodriquez Williams, 19, recalled to the Clarion-Ledger being “handcuffed and locked in the school gym all day. While being punished, students aren’t allowed to use the bathroom and sometimes they don’t get lunch, he said. Some students received scars or bruises from being handcuffed, Williams said. The treatment came for minor mistakes, such as not wearing a belt, wearing the wrong shoes or not fully tucking in a shirt.”
