Knoxville, TN — A National Guard helicopter crashed in Campbell County over the weekend, killing two Knoxville pilots on Saturday, July 9, 2011. The fatal aviation accident occurred near Exit 141 on Interstate 75 about 5:30 p.m., reported KnoxNews.
According to the Tennessee Military Department, the two pilots—both members of the 1/230th Air Cavalry Squadron, Troop C, base at McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base- were identified as Tennessee Army National Guard 1st Lt. Thomas Joseph Williams Jr., 26, and Chief Warrant Officer 4 Daniel Cole, 41, were killed in the helicopter crash.
Their OH-58D Kiowa Warrior went down for unknown reasons while conducting a routine training flight.
The helicopter reportedly hit power lines at some point during the aviation accident, which caused brief power outages in the area.
Cole, who was an instructor pilot, had over 20 years of service, which included deployments in Iraq in 2009-2010, as well as Kosovo in 2004-2005.
Williams had three years of military service.
An Army aviation safety team from Fort Rucker, Ala., is investigating the helicopter crash.
