Washington, D.C. — A tour bus that collided with at least two tractor-trailers on the New Jersey Turnpike injured over a dozen people, three critically on Wednesday, August 24, 2011. The tour bus crash occurred shortly after noon in the turnpike’s southbound lanes in South Brunswick, reported UPI and the Washington Post.
According to police, the Washington D.C.-bound bus had left Brooklyn at around 11 a.m. and made a stop in Manhattan before continuing to Washington. While on their way to Washington, the bus collided with two tractor-trailers.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Over 50 people were aboard the Washington Deluxe coach, but only about seventeen people sustained minor injuries in the wreck. Three people were seriously injured in the tour bus crash.
Authorities reported that the 52-year-old bus drover was well rested prior to his shift. He had reportedly slept in New York the night before.
“His safety record is very good,” said Dan Ronan, a spokesman for the American Bus Association. “He had a current commercial driver’s license in Virginia with no violations. His medical certification is current.”
Investigations into the tour bus crash are underway.
