The 2011 Melbourne Cup will include a record eighteen horses, out of the standard field of twenty-four, from outside Australia and New Zealand. These eighteen ‘raiders’ have arrived from Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, France and the United States. Making the 2011 Melbourne Cup a far reaching global event expected to be viewed by over seven hundred million people.
This contingent of foreign contenders is led by reigning Melbourne Cup champion, the French galloper Americain. Americain won the 2010 Melbourne fresh off a victory in a key lead up race, the 2400 metre Geelong Cup.
This year Americain took a similar path, winning his first up start on Australian soil in the 2500 metre Moonee Valley Cup, which was held on the 1st of October.
Other key International contenders include the Godolphin owned Modun and Lost In The Moment, both from Ireland. The Ed Dunlop trained Red Cadeaux (GB), who finished third in the Irish St. Leger behind Jukebox Jury (IRE). The Mark Johnston trained Jukebox Jury will also be competing, and is receiving fair backing.
The contingent of eighteen ‘raiders’ drawing the most attention other than Americain, include the Mikel Delzangles trained Dunaden (FR) who took the same path as Americain last year. Dunaden won the 2400 metre 2011 Geelong Cup first up on Australian soil, while carrying the same weight as Americain rode with last year.
Likewise, the imported German galloper Lucas Cranach, is also showing good form and has received a fair amount of backing. Lucas Cranach is trained by Anthony Freedman, who’s been a part of five Melbourne Cup wins, including three with the amazing Makybe Diva.
The Australian stayer that’s received the most support of late is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes trained Niwot. Niwot is fresh off a victory in the 2500 metre Lexus Stakes, which provided for an automatic ballot and a good lead up.
