/EINPresswire.com/ TeethCenter, the #1 dental resource on the web says many patient’s drug addiction can start with treatment after wisdom teeth extraction
Addiction to drugs is a growing problem across the world with the number growing at an alarming rate. Teegan Richarson, a spokesperson for TeethCenter says that many young adults have their first experience with pain killers when they have their wisdom teeth extracted after complaining about wisdom teeth pain. “Most of us have had our wisdom teeth extracted at some point and it usually happens as young adults. Unfortunately, your typical dentist is not encouraged to have a talk with their patients prior to prescribing the standard pain killers.”
Richardson says that although it’s not a dental practitioners job to educate these patients about drug addiction, this procedure is, in many cases, the first time these patients are sent home with a big bottle of opiates.
TeethCenter says that in many cases, a standard over the counter pain medication will do the job after a few days of a stronger drug, but, many times, patients will head to the emergency room complaining of pain in hopes of getting a refill. Emergency room visits for pain increased 117% from 1994 to 2001 and the increase since 2001 in staggering. “Impacted wisdom teeth need to be removed in most cases and there is no way around that. At the same time, the awareness needs to continue to grow.”
