Tulsa, Oklahoma – A Tulsa dentist may have exposed thousands of patients to HIV and other diseases. As reported by ABC News, The Tulsa Health Department is issuing warnings to 7,000 patients of oral surgeon Dr. Wayne Harrington, who is under investigation after one of his patients tested positive for hepatitis C and HIV. The patient purportedly had did not have any other known risk factors aside from the dental treatment he had received.
A complaint filed by the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry is quoted in the report as reading, “During the inspections, Dr. Harrington referred to his staff regarding all sterilization and drug procedures in his office…He advised, ‘They take care of that. I don’t.”
A surprise inspection of the dentist’s practice by the board unveiled several indications of poor sterilization practices including the use of rusty instruments.
