Oakland, CA – The family of Jahi McMath, whom doctors recently declared brain dead, planned to spend Christmas Day at the hospital where she has been staying. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Jahi’s family expressed wanting to make the day as normal as possible with presents and a tree in her room.
A judge ruled that a hospital could remove her from life support according to the uncle of the girl, Omari Sealey. Sealey is quoted by the AP as stating on Wednesday, “We’re going to discuss our opportunities tomorrow. Today we are going to keep as regular as possible…We still got five days for a miracle. We are still hopeful.”
Alameda County Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo ruled on Tuesday that Children’s Hospital Oakland could remove Jahi from a ventilator, but determined she is to stay on life support until Dec. 30 at 5 p.m., the deadline for her family to appeal the decision.
Hospital attorney Doug Strauss is quoted by the AP as stating following the judge’s ruling, “Our sincere hope is that the family finds peace and can come to grips with the judge’s decision.”
