Washington – The U.S. Supreme Court held a meeting on Monday to consider taking cases related to the decisions of some states to ban gay marriage. As reported by Reuters, the nine justices of the high court discussed the matter in private, and could make an announcement regarding their decision this week.

As noted in the report, seven cases are currently pending before the court that relate to gay marriage bans in five states. If any of the cases are accepted by the high court, then it could rule on when same sex couples in the states where gay marriage is prohibited could obtain marriage licenses.

In the U.S., 19 states have legalized gay marriage. Proponents of gay marriage assert that bans imposed by states concerning marriage between same sex couples is a violation of the U.S. Constitution.

The Supreme Court will officially reconvene next week.
