Mexico City – Two migrants died in a truck crash in southern Mexico. The Associated Press reported the two migrants from Central America were traveling in a three-ton truck that overturned while carrying 41 people. According to authorities, the migrants who were from Guatemala and Honduras, paid $380 each to travel to the border of the U.S. after first entering Mexico. They were expected to pay an additional $2,950 to get help with entering the country thereafter.
The National Institute for Migration said in a statement that the crash occurred near San Francisco Ixhuatan in Oaxaca state on Sunday night.
The Mexican government has been criticized by human rights organizations for their pursuit of Central American migrants since last year.
Ruben Figueroa of migrant advocacy organization, the Mesoamerican Migrant Movement, has said of the issue, “In recent months we have noted an increase in the traffic of people due to the southern border plan” and “strong persecution by federal authorities, which has resulted in accidents where migrants have died and been injured in clashes between human smugglers and police.”
Between October and April, 92,889 Central American migrants were detained by Mexico.
