PSL, FL – Written by Award-Winning Author, Janet Balletta, “The Legend of Roberto Cofresi – A Puerto Rican Hero” is a creative and magical, new children’s book that explores the mythical world of pirates and corsairs. As a child, Balletta was told the story of Cofresi, and she never forgot it. Now, she brings the story to the next generation of young readers.
The legend began in the seafaring town of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, where Cofresi lived and dreamed of becoming a sailor when he grew up. As a young man, he worked as a merchant sailor and later converted to corsair, when Puerto Rico was still ruled by Spain. Historically, Puerto Rico suffered much poverty and famine in which Cofresi generously helped the poor. For this reason, the people of Puerto Rico have recognized him as a Robin Hood and Puerto Rican hero.
It continues with an enchanting new book by Janet Balletta, titled “The Legend of Roberto Cofresi – A Puerto Rican Hero”. Telling the tale of brave little captains, Jacob and Joseph, two young boys who love hearing bedtime stories about pirates. One day their father uses the opportunity to teach them a lesson about history, hope, and charity by reading them a story of the legendary corsair. This book promises to delight children and parents alike with its charming characters and rich illustrations by Estella Mejia.
Synopsis:
“The Legend of Roberto Cofresi – A Puerto Rican Hero” is based on the Puerto Rican folktale of Roberto Cofresi, a brave and compassionate corsair, who is renowned as the Robin Hood of Puerto Rico for his generosity towards the poor during a time of poverty and famine when Puerto Rico was ruled by Spain.
“The Legend of Roberto Cofresi was a favorite bedtime story and I cherished listening to my father tell it,” says Balletta. “Of course, what I now realize is not only the story entertaining, but it teaches a great lesson on generosity, loyalty, and the warm-hearted nature of Puerto Rican culture.” With years of experience in working with children, Balletta is committed to education and helping kids understand and navigate other cultures. “As an educator, I have a passion for literacy and I hope my books inspire children to develop an appreciation for bilingual and multicultural literature,” says Balletta.
About the Author: Janet Balletta is a bilingual second-grade teacher in Port St. Lucie, Fl. She is also the author of the award-winning children’s book, “The Legend of the Colombian Mermaid”, the tale of a young girl who turned into a mermaid after she defied her parents and went swimming on Good Friday. Janet will launch her new pirate book at the San Juan Festival on Saturday, September 26, 2015, in the Port St. Lucie Civic Center located at 9221 SE Civic Center Place, Port St. Lucie, Fl., from 10 am to 6 pm.
